The Art of Nicolas Poussin

"The Athenian Plague" A rare look at a very rare Poussin painting. In fact I am not even sure if he painted it although I have heard it mentioned in some articles. Whether this is a copy or a photograph or the actual painting is unknown by me since this is the one and only time I have seen this image. It was found on Corbis and bears the watermark he uses. If anyone has a larger image to share I would be most greatful.

430 BC, the plague of Athens--resulted from 200,000 inhabitants and villagers fleeing into Athens when threatened by the Spartans. An unidentified infectious agent, from Ethiopia via Egypt, killed one third of this population and ended the Golden Age of Athens. Click here for Thucydides on the Athenian Plague of 430 B.C.

Description

The cloaked figure is Tobit, a devout Jew who in defiance of Sennacherib's orders directed the burial of the Jews whom the king had killed outside the walls of Nineveh (Tobit I:17–20). The picture was painted in Rome in the 1640s. Andrea di Lione knew both Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione and Nicolas Poussin, and this work is indebted to both of those artists.
